: As the given conditions, X-OR gateways will be used in BPMN. In other words, each condition will determine certain task, and other tasks or actions will be ignored by that condition.

My negotiation experiences: Distributive vs. Integrative

1. When I was in Korea, I used to teach Korean version of SAT to highschool students as a personal tutor. There is a rule that the tutor fee should be prepaied at the first day of the class. Before I begin teaching student, I had to negotiate the amount of my pay with the student’s parents. At this point of time, my college rank, my certification, and any teaching experience are very important criteria to decide my pay. I’m a seller, and parents are buyers. I just wanted to earn as much as I can. The parents, they usually don’t care about the money. The only thing they care about it the student’s success in exams. I can tell this could be an integrative negotiation because both parties, me and parents, collaborate to find a “win-win” solution to our dispute so that both parties achieve maximum mutual gains (Roy J.L, David M.S, and John W. M, 1999).

2. I’m working at the Metropcs store downtown in Atlanta. Customers are not always willing to pay whole price, they sometimes ask for discount. As a sales manager, I would think if I don’t offer the discounted price, they might go to other place and purchase the phone. Therefore, I have to negotiate with customers to set up the reduced price to sell my products. I think this is a distributive negotiation because I have to lose something.

3. I have purchased the used cars three times. Each time I negotiated with the seller, I always felt like I paid too much compare to other people’s purchase. It could be the example of the distributive negotiations.

4. I play baseball every Sunday in local league in Norcross. My team, Mustangs, recently made a sponsorship contract with a manager of Korean karaoke named Doremi. I was in charge of negotiating the sponsorship amount with the manager. He said he can only give us $500, but I tried to pursuade him to sponsor $1000. I explained there will be huge amount of advertising effect if he sponsors that amount of money because we will attach his business logo on the uniform and baseball caps. Also I explained him that every game record will be shown in the local Korean newspaper with our team’s name as “Doremi Mustangs.” He was pleased when he heard that, and finally he gave us $1000 in cash. This is definately the integrative negotiation because it is a win-win scenario.

I liked the phrase written in the tutorial, “create your own server in Amazon’s server farm located somewhere up there in the clouds.” Creating AWS was not that hard at all, because the instructions in the EC2 for poet were fairly easy to follow and gave me a very detailed information. Tim wrote on wiki that it will take about 10 minutes to an hour, I spent about 25 minutes to complete set up. However, the overall process to create the server seemed to be very complicated. I’m expecting that how we’re going to make a process model for this activity later in the class.

Field Trip: IS&T Help Desk

Our group picked the Georgia State University’s IS&T help desk located at near the dorm for the field trip project. Ms. Dickens was a person who explained the business process of the help desk. Carlos emailed her before the meeting to make an appointment with her. We also prepared several questions to ask her about details of the process prior to the interview. The interview lasted about 30 minutes, and she was very interested in our questions and overall project. We also recorded the interview so that we don’t miss any important message.

Ms. Dickens said the main process is to reset the student’s campus password. The overall process was pretty simple and well-organized, so there were not many problems in the process. After we made a business model using bizagi and sent her, we were glad that she was satisfied with it.

The field trip was great experiece as we modeled the real-world business process. It would been better experience if there were significant as-is problems so that we can suggest any improvement.

Taking practice tests

I would say… they were hard, but extremely useful to understand BPMN. Firstly, I took Bruce Silver’s test. I had two attempts to take, and it was 30 minutes timed. There were 10 questions covers almost whole chapters we have learned in the class. The test focused on how events -Start, intermediate, and end- are appropriately used in BPMN. There were variety of situations and mostly I had pick up the correct model that fits the situations given. Some questions were bit tricky, I got 50 at the first attempt.

It is an excellent explanation of the test answers with video clips -Very Helful for preparing the exam!

The second test, Humboldt-Universitat zu Berlin and Technische Universiteit Eindhoven’s Test, was asking about understanding relationships and sequence between each task. Each question had very complicated business process model, and my job was find what kind of gateway links the task and subprocess to be able to answer the questions.
